Noor's POV:
The sunset is beautiful from this sight. The wind carries a comfortable warmth, and my hair frames my face like it's part of a portrait. The depth of the hills is both beautiful and terrifying. Suddenly, the mountains seemed to rush toward me—and with a loud thud, I crashed onto the ground through my bed.
Yes, it was my alarm that disturbed my sleep.
Panic surged through me as I noticed the time: 7:30 AM. I couldn’t afford to be late on the first day of my internship. I quickly grabbed my black kurta set and rushed to occupy the washroom for 45 minutes—I had to wash my hair, after all.
I stepped out in a sleeveless black kurta set, my hair slightly damp.
I quickly wore my silver oxidised Jhumkas and placed a black bindi between my eyebrows. After straightening my hair, I applied moisturiser, sunscreen, and lip balm. I completed the look with brown juttis.

I grabbed my white coat and draped it over my shoulder with determination.
My first day as a veterinary doctor.
My career.
My dream.
I glanced at the mirror. I looked pretty good. No wonder I love the colour black. But someone loved me in this outfit more than I did.
Someone who was once obsessed with me in it.
"You always take my breath away in this outfit."
Heart, this is not the time to remember him.
After getting ready, I walked to the dining table to grab my lunch and a glass of juice, while my father gave me the look for skipping breakfast.
I’ve never been a breakfast fan, and he's on a mission to change that.
As I reached for my helmet, Oreo and Maggie came howling at me.
Maggie is my first pet—or rather, my first baby. We brought her home four years ago. She’s a white Pomeranian and never fails to ease my morning stress.
Oreo, on the other hand, is a brown and white Shih Tzu. We got him two years ago, and he completes our family.
“Don’t disturb mamma, babies. I’ll come home in the evening and then we’ll play, okay? Wish me luck,” I cooed at them.
They wagged their tails and stood up on their hind legs, wishing me good luck. After greeting Mom and Dad, I left the house.
By 8:30, I started my scooty and headed to the hospital. Thankfully, traffic was light today. It took 25 minutes to reach my destination.
Okay, I have 5 minutes to reach my cabin on the 4th floor.
After impatiently waiting for the lift, I gave up and took the stairs.
Now, only the corridor was left, and my watch showed 8:58. I was quick.
But as luck would have it, a tall man collided with me in the corridor, and all the papers from his file scattered to the floor.
He wore a white coat, glasses perched on his nose.
Frustration bubbled up inside me. I could’ve helped him if I wasn’t in such a hurry.
Before he could apologize, I muttered, “It’s okay,” and moved on. I didn’t have the time or energy to waste on an owl who didn’t know how to walk in corridors.
I reached my desk and started checking the patients who were waiting. The first one was a cute 3-month-old Labrador puppy named Coffee, who was here for vaccination.
After attending to seven patients, it was finally lunchtime.
I was scrolling through Instagram while eating, when suddenly, a post appeared in front of me—a post from someone I didn’t want to see.
Why, of all days, did I have to see his face today?
He was on some vacation with his friends.
Good for him.
“I also want to go with you par tera kaam hi khatam nhi hota”
[I also want to go with you, but your work never ends.]
“Tujhe to bas apni aur apne is sapne ki padi hai”
[You only care about yourself and your dreams.]
“Tu nhi aayegi to maine kisi aur ke saath chala jaaunga”
[If you don’t come, I’ll go with someone else.]
Shaking my head to clear his voice from my mind, I finished my lunch and grabbed the next patient’s file.
A squirrel had been brought in by a few kids—she’d fallen from a tree. I was just checking to make sure she was okay.
After checking four more patients, it was time to head home.

Author's POV:
At 8:00 PM, the doorbell rang, and Noor’s mom opened the door to let her in.
“Laddoo, kaisa gaya tera pehla din kaam pe?” her mom asked enthusiastically.
[Laddoo (nickname), how was your first day at work?]
“Acha tha, Mumma. Bohot saare patients se mili main,” she replied.
[It was good mumma. I met a lot of patients.]
Just then, Oreo came running and jumped on her, licking her face. She laughed at his mischief and played with him for a while.
“Bachha, pehle fresh ho jaa, phir inke saath khelna,” Rukmani said.
[ Kiddo, freshen up first then play with them.]
Agreeing with her mom, Noor went to her room to freshen up. On her way back, she saw Maggie watching TV on the sofa. She gently patted her head and cradled her.
At 8:30, Noor’s mom emerged from the kitchen and set the table.
“Khaana lag gaya hai, aa jao sab,” she called, placing a water jug on the table.
[Dinner is ready, everyone come.]
While having dinner, her father asked about her first day at the hospital. The dinner passed with light chit-chat and playful conversation.
After dinner, Noor went to her room. She had to prepare files and assignments related to the patients she had seen.
The wall clock showed 11:00 PM. Wrapping up her work, she went to bed with her phone in hand.
Her day had been good—just as she had hoped.
Until a memory struck her again.
It’s not that she misses him. But the way he was woven into her life—even into the little things, like her outfit—still pricked at her.
She had bravely overcome a painful past, but the scars hadn’t completely faded.
With that lingering thought, she tried calling her best friend, Yukti.
Yukti is currently doing research at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Tamil Nadu.
As she didn’t answer the call, Noor placed her phone on the side table and drifted off to sleep.
